CBD Treats Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder, According to Study

Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a common side effect of the neurodegenerative disorder, Parkinson’s disease. Those suffering from it can physically act out vivid and often unpleasant dreams. This usually includes vocal sounds and sudden, often violent arm and leg movements during REM sleep. This, in turn, results in less satisfying sleep. Other studies have looked into treating other aspects of the disease, like the myofascial pain it causes, with CBD. These studies found that CBD actually helps with many of these symptoms. A recent study followed that line of thought to see if CBD treats rapid eye movement sleep behavior caused by Parkinson’s disease.

Study

The researchers examined a double-blind, placebo-controlled study. They took 33 subjects with RBD and Parkinson’s disease. They offered CBD doses that ranged from 75 to 300 mg or matched capsules of placebo. The researchers followed this up for 14 weeks. They then examined the number of nights when the subjects had RBD.

Results

The researchers found that the placebo group had no different in the results. On the other hand, the researchers found a significant improvement in average sleep satisfaction from the fourth to eighth week with the CBD group. Specifically, they found a transient, or temporary, improvement with the introduction of 300 mg. This means that those treated with 300 mg of CBD experienced a temporary, but significant improvement in how restful, and lacking in the usual symptoms, their sleep was.

Discussion

With the use of CBD to treat the different, more well-known Parkinson’s symptoms, it stands to reason to also use it to treat the other symptoms as well. Since the researchers found that the use of CBD caused an improvement in those dealing with rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, it could be used as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease overall.

However, because the range of CBD used is so large and the sample size was so small, researchers need to continue to study the effects of CBD on Parkinson’s disease. That way, they can establish whether or not it is worthwhile to consider it as a potential treatment.
