Federal Scientists Detail How Marijuana Regulations Inhibit Crucial Research

As people continue to try and bring about changes surrounding the different cannabis legislation, there are still limitations to their efforts. Researching the potential benefits of the products, especially, has been stalled due to roadblocks being placed in the path. In fact, federal scientists have recently published a paper that detailed these marijuana regulations and what lawmakers could do to remove them.

Details

The scientist made up a research team of six, which included those from three different federal agencies. These agencies include National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health, and Food and Drug Administration. In this paper, they examined the cannabis regulatory systems in place in the U.S.

The team found that the conflicting regulations, both state and federal, have hindered research. For example, researchers aren’t able to access products that are legal in their state. Additionally, there is a lack of standardization and quality control of cannabis and cannabis-derived products within and across states. Finally, they pointed out how there is no national oversight over this aforementioned issue.

Past Examinations

This paper wasn’t the only time people looked into the restrictions. There have been eight other papers that looked into the overall topic of cannabis. For example, they looked into cannabis policy and public health, cancer risks and nonmedical cannabis use, and a number of other topics.

Potential Solutions

The paper offered a few solutions to getting around these marijuana regulations. First, the authors suggested collaborations between researchers with those more experienced would advise those who were less familiar with studying the field. They also mentioned that different groups could provide more guidance and support. The paper also mentioned that partnerships across borders would allow researchers to take advantage of different opportunities in other countries.

Hope

With yet another paper pushing for change in regards to cannabis legislation, activists hope that this will convince lawmakers to allow some changes. The laws have restricted research in particular, which many of them feel is needless. With research stalled, they cannot accurately demonstrate the benefits of the products. Hopefully, this paper will show why lawmakers should allow for these changes surrounding research.
