Kevin Smith, Hollywood filmmaker known for his character Silent Bob in the “Jay and Silent Bob” movies, shared his excitement for New Jersey legalizing recreational cannabis. Smith took to Twitter with some “Clerks III” spoilers. It means that Jay and Silent Bob are back, and they’re legal.

In previous films, Jay and Silent Bob were typically seen standing outside of a video store, or a convenience store, doing whatever and selling marijuana. Back in 2001, only eight states had legalized medical marijuana usage. The first states to legalize recreational marijuana usage were in 2012. So, Jay and Silent Bob were dealing under the table. And with their hilarious and rather outrageous attitudes, mostly from Jay, the pair became an iconic duo. 

New Jersey Legalization

In November’s general election, New Jersey citizens voted to legalize recreational use of marijuana in Public Question 1. This created an amendment to the state’s constitution to allow possession of cannabis for individuals over 21. It also allowed for retail stores to sell small amounts of cannabis to qualifying individuals. New Jersey legalized medical cannabis for qualifying patients in 2010. The state moves forward in the national trend to become one of now 17 states to legalize recreational cannabis. 

In addition to announcing “Clerks III” spoilers, Kevin Smith also stated that he would be returning to New Jersey to film the movie with many of the original “Clerks” actors. This includes Jeff Anderson, who played the video store clerk Randal Graves in both “Clerks” and “Clerks II.”

Future

While waiting for the greenlight to move forward with “Clerks III,” Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes, who plays Jay in the series, went on tour at the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 to start and reboot Jay and Silent Bob as a dynamic duo. The comedy series, dubbed the “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot Roadshow,” was filmed in New Orleans, Louisiana. But “Clerks III” is going to be filmed in New Jersey. It’s New Jersey or bust according to Smith. 

In “Clerks III,” Jay and Silent Bob set up their marijuana store in the old RST video store, which they now dub RST THCCBD, for all your recreational and herbal needs. Filming and production are still waiting for the go ahead. But for fans of the series, the statement is clear: Jay and Silent Bob are back and ready to go.
