Cultivators have been looking for new ways to use their different cannabis plants. In fact, hemp, one of the most popular types of plants, has been shown to have a number of potential sources. Cultivators have used hemp for clothing, construction, and tea, but now cultivators are finding it might be more suited than other types of fibers. A recent interview with Lawrence Serbin, the president of California-based Hemp Traders and Cannagrove, discussed this idea.

Details

Cannagrove produces engineered hemp “wood” particleboard and textiles.  However, they have recently noticed a surge in demand for hemp as an environmental alternative to other fibers in textiles. They are currently working on increasing their first farm size test crop in California’s Central Valley. After which, they plan to set up a fiber processing facility near the farm.

Perks

Serbin described in his interview that the original boards were more expensive. He explained that this is because they need to import the hemp from China. However, with this new plan of having a facility near where they will grow the plant, it will make their products much cheaper. Once this occurs, the materials will be less expensive than the regular wood particleboards.

Restrictions

Also, Serbine explained that there are some restrictions to this plan to grow the plant in California. This is due to the fact that some areas have mixed reactions to the idea. High marijuana production areas are worried that the high CBD hemp plants will cross-pollinate with their crops and lower their value. On the other hand, the areas where cultivators grow CBD have complained about the pungent odor of cannabis around harvest time. Finally, he reported that there is currently an overregulation of the industry, especially when it comes to fiber crops.

Hope

With this new option to use hemp in a new way, activists hope that this will show that hemp and cannabis as a whole can be useful. With this demonstration, they hope that it will push lawmakers into changing the legislation. Regardless, it does offer a cheaper and more environmental alternative to those looking for materials.
