HIV-Positive Patients Using CBD to Lower Inflammation

Researchers have looked at cannabis products to work on a number of different ailments. Now, researchers have begun examine CBD to help those with HIV. Researchers have already established CBD’s anti-inflammatory effect. However, now, researchers have found that it helps those that are HIV-positive. According to a study performed by the University of California, researchers found that the anti-inflammatory effect actually helps with their issues as well.

Study

The researchers performing the study divided 263 individuals into four groups, differing whether they were HIV-positive and frequent cannabis users. Next, the researchers then examined the differences in the pro-inflammatory biomarkers between them.

Results

The results of the study are that those that were HIV-positive and took cannabis daily reported lower levels of inflammation. In fact, the levels were similar to those that were HIV-negative and non-cannabis users. Additionally, this goes along well with a previous study that also reported a decrease of inflammation in those that take cannabis products.

Discussion

The effect’s importance cannot be understated. As a result, doctors could potentially treat a major symptom of HIV, chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is what leads to those found to be HIV-positive suffering from much more serious illnesses. Specifically, chronic inflammation contributes to their increased risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, liver disease, and others.

The inflammation occurs when HIV launches an assault on the gut and the immune system responds by inflaming the infected area. In turn, this inflammation increases to such an extent that it actually damages the host body. As such, by having CBD treat the inflammation, those that are HIV-positive will be less likely to develop the more serious afflictions that come with it.

Hopefully, by proving CBD’s effects, researchers will be able to show that it can be used as a potential treatment.
