More Americans Support Replacing Marijuana with Alcohol

As the debate over marijuana legalization continues to rage on different levels of government, some people are trying to get information about how much the general public is actually supporting it. As a result, a recent poll looked into the idea of Americans’ support for marijuana legalization and use. The researchers found that the results were more supportive of cannabis than some might think. In fact, more supported using cannabis over using alcohol.

Marijuana/Alcohol Poll Details

The poll involved interviewing 10,412 Americans on February 28. Those in charge of the poll found that 27 percent of the respondents thought it would be good if the average American drank less alcohol and used more marijuana. On the other hand, 20 percent stated that it would be bad. 38 percent of the respondents thought it would be neither good nor bad. A final 15 percent reported not being sure.

They also found that 34 percent of the “good” respondents were Democrats while 18 percent were Republicans and 27 percent were Independents. The researchers also found that people aged 30 to 44 were more likely to support the switch. People who were 65 and older made up 17 percent who said the same.

Marijuana/Alcohol Poll Support Reasons

There has been some evidence from the cannabis-legal states to support the belief that it would be an improvement to make this change. For instance, Massachusetts has reported collecting more tax revenue from marijuana than alcohol with Illinois reporting the same in 2020. Idaho has also reported that the number of drunk-driving accidents decreased after the neighboring state of Washington legalized cannabis.

Marijuana/Alcohol Poll Explanation

This isn’t the first time that the legalization of cannabis has shown to help with the finances of states. Illinois reported that, with their additional tax revenue, they have improved other areas. For instance, the home values have increased thanks, in part, to the legalization of cannabis.

Additionally, a study performed back in Dec. 2021 found that people using cannabis binge drank less. All of these could explain why the people could support replacing alcohol with cannabis.
