Ohio Activists Claim that They Will Reach Signature Goal by End of Month

As a number of different groups try to make changes in regards to cannabis legalization, different states are still divided over which way to go. One of these still divided states is Ohio. Recently, they had a number of their different precincts vote on whether or not they should decriminalize cannabis use. However, that attempt still resulted into an even division between the precincts. That said, activists in Ohio have continued to push for changes, most recently by gathering signatures in order to push the change on lawmakers.

Details

Ohio activists have been gathering signatures in order to force lawmakers to consider legalization of cannabis. This project started months prior, when Ohio officials cleared the campaign. Assuming the activists succeed in getting the required signatures, the form will require legislators to consider legalizing possession of up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis. They claim that they will receive the last of the signatures by the end of November. The form will focus on adults 21 and older. Additionally, the adults would be able to possess up to 15 grams of marijuana concentrates. Legislators will have four months to adopt or reject the idea. They could also adopt an amended version. If they reject the proposal, the activists will need to collect another 132,887 signatures to get it on the 2022 ballot.

Attempts

Tom Haren, one of those leading the campaign for these signatures, has pointed out that activists are focused on convincing lawmakers to accept this proposal. However, he has also pointed out that they have been receiving more support from Republicans than they thought. However, Haren says it isn’t very surprising because it is “inevitable,” which he says most recognize. In fact, Republicans recently pushed a bill to try and cause similar changes in the federal government.

Hope

It is the hope of activists in both the state of Ohio and the country that this will lead to major changes in regards to the legalization debate. Even if this current attempt doesn’t lead to the desired changes, the activists are still willing to continue trying to cause these changes.
