Psilocybin, a naturally occurring plant alkaloid, has promising effects on patients with depression and or anxiety, even after a single dose.

Psilocybin mushrooms have a deep history of use in spiritual and religious ceremonies. Recently, they have gained the attention of researchers as a treatment for several psychiatric disorders.

It acts as a serotonin 2A receptor agonist and as a result is known to produce positive effects on emotions, perceptions, and thoughts.

Currently, most countries prohibit psilocybin mushrooms , but they are popular in parts of Europe and the USA. There are three common ways to consume the mushrooms; fresh from the ground, dried, or dissolving them in tea.

In the illicit drug category, experts consider psilocybin to be one of the least dangerous and most beneficial drugs. Studies have shown that it doesn’t produce any severe mental or physical health effects.

Positive Effects of Psilocybin

Several studies have reported that Psilocybin produced positive and sustained improvements in overall health and well-being. Furthermore, healthy individuals reported enhanced wellbeing after receiving a single dose. Research shows that it can have rapid and lasting positive effects on mental health among those not struggling with depression.

Psilocybin has promising effects on patients with depression, and has proven to be safe when a health professional guides the patient in addition to psychotherapy.

A study among treatment-resistant depression reports substantial decreases in depressive symptoms one week and three months after patients took 10-25 mg of psilocybin in two sessions. Potential effectiveness is also shown in the treatment of anxiety-related patients suffering terminal diagnoses and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Most participants reported thinking more clearly after taking psilocybin. One participant was able to discontinue the use of three anti-depression medications and sleeping pills. Participants also reported a more positive outlook on life. This includes a deeper sense of peace and appreciation of self. Others said they experienced enhanced feelings of comfort and living in the present.
