The National Institute on Drug Abuse to Examine the Idea of Using Cannabinoids to Treat HIV

With more groups and organizations looking into the potential benefits of cannabis and its products, the number of studies being performed is growing. As a result, the researchers are continuing to look into how the cannabinoids can affect different ailments. Past studies have shown that cannabis can help to treat pain, Tourette’s syndrome, and cancer cells. Now, the National Institute on Drug Abuse is creating a panel to look into how the cannabinoids might affect the inflammation of HIV.

Past Study

This idea has already been looked into by other researchers. This study involved the researchers using CBD to treat the inflammation caused by HIV. They found that the subjects who were HIV-positive and used cannabis products daily had less inflammation than the other subjects. In fact, the researchers found that those subjects had the same level of inflammation as those who were HIV-negative.

Panel Purpose

As mentioned earlier, the National Institute on Drug Abuse will be forming a panel on Oct. 26. The purpose of the panel that the aforementioned institute is putting on is to evaluate grant applications. These grant applications are specifically focusing around other studies to look into how cannabinoids, like CBD, can affect the inflammation of HIV patients. While this doesn’t directly help to prove pro-cannabis advocates’ points about its benefits, it will provide funding to those that will. As such, this will help to demonstrate the benefits of cannabis in the treatment of one of the most common and difficult to treat diseases.

Hope

With a national institute looking into the topic, it shows that people are taking this idea of using cannabis as a treatment seriously. Also, with the grants that they will offer, researchers will be able to perform more studies to demonstrate its benefits. It is the hope of activists that this will lead to further proof demonstrating the benefits of cannabis. Additionally, it is their hope that it will, eventually, lead to full legalization of it.
