U.K. Lawyer Moving from Tradition by Donning Vegan Hemp Wig

Law in the United Kingdom is steeped in tradition with those involved dressing in the same way for centuries past. These include wigs and long black robes that will likely seem very old-fashioned to those outside of the country. However, one attorney is breaking from tradition in a very unique way. He is replacing the traditional horsehair wig with a new plant-based one. He has stated that he hopes others will follow his lead and don a vegan, hemp wig as well.

Vegan Hemp Wig Details

Samuel March, the attorney making this change, first previewed his new wig last year. He described that the horsehair wigs as outdated. However, this new version is more animal-friendly and environmentally sustainable.

Current Status of Vegan Hemp Wig

At this time, the hemp wig is only in the testing phase for those interested. Since people know hemp as a “notoriously” tough material, March stated that he hopes it catches on and he doesn’t anticipate any issues with wear and tear. He also admits that his target audience will limit the market for these wigs. This is because he will be solely selling to fellow vegan barristers. However, he is insistent that it is the market he is focusing on.

Origins for Vegan Hemp Wig

While the U.K. government hasn’t made many steps forward in regards to cannabis reform, hemp has become more acceptable in different forms over the years. March stated that the legal tradition of wearing the horsehair wigs should be optional for those who have issues with them. He specifically refers to those who have some issue with “dressing as a white man from the 18th century” like those who wear turbans or headscarves.

Resistance to Tradition

Some have stated their disapproval of the continuing of the tradition. A black barrister recently criticized the tradition by describing it as culturally insensitive and ridiculous. Additionally, Michael Etienne, a barrister with an afro, was recently threatened with disciplinary action if he didn’t cover it with a wig.

Potential for a New Tradition

With this new product making waves among the U.K.’s barristers, the others looking for a more environmentally and animal-friendly option will now have one. However, as this is still in the “testing phase,” it is still up for debate as to whether or not the court will allow it.
