Understanding the Cannabinoid CBN

For some, cannabinoid is a strange word. What does it mean? Well, cannabinoids are compounds found in the cannabis plant. The plant has over 120 different cannabinoids in it. Some are common, such as Delta 9 THC. This is the main component that creates psychoactive effects in people who consume cannabis. Other cannabinoids, like CBD, have risen in popularity on the market for their more subtle effects on the body. Typically, CBD has none of the negative effects associated with Delta 9.

Cannabinol

There are other, lesser known cannabinoids that have positive effects on the human body. After Delta 9 THC and CBD, the third most researched cannabinoid is CBN (cannabinol). It’s the third most researched cannabinoid. However, there still isn’t much research available. Up until recently, cannabinoids joined the cannabis plant on the Schedule I drug list. Many researchers who requested to study CBN were denied.

What research is available, however, shows positive results for people. Specifically, with sedation. CBN is commonly used by people for sleep , anxiety, inflammation, and pain relief. When CBN combines with other cannabinoids, like Delta 8 THC, the effects intensify. CBN has around 10% of the activity Delta 9 THC does.

Effects

CBN is mostly used for its sedative effects. In one informal study, CBN along with anesthesia helped keep a patient under during surgery without having to use any additional sedatives other than the initial dose. When patients are put under for anesthesia, the drugs used are either ketamine or pentobarbital in combination with diazepam. CBN offered twice the sedative  potency compared to diazepam, which helped keep patients under anesthesia for longer.

Despite a lack of formal research, many consumers have reported other positive notes based on products with a larger amount of CBN in them.

Delta 8 THC

Why combine CBN with Delta 8 over Delta 9? Delta 8 THC is a less potent strain of THC found in cannabis. It offers the same effects as Delta 9 does at half the strength. It also comes without any strange side effects , like paranoia or anxiety. Combining Delta 8 and CBN together allows consumers to feel the euphoric high of Delta 8 on a more controlled level. The combination helps with any racing thoughts, stress, or anxiety life can throw at people.
