USDA Looking into Hemp-Based Cosmetics Among Others

In a recent statement, the USDA announced that it will be partnering with Illinois-based Midwest Bioprocessing Center (MBC). Their goal: to create an innovative approach to creating hemp “cosmeceuticals,” or hemp-based cosmetics. These would include skin protection from UV light, locking in face moisture, and stabilizing other active ingredients in different make-up products.

Current Products

There are cannabis plant based products on the market. One brand, e.l.f, has created affordable moisturizers and face cleansers from cannabis sativa seeds. Another brand, NYX, also has a line of cannabis plant based products.Theirs are more primers, which are lotions applied before foundation and other make-up products.

However, with these companies, their products are labeled as THC free cannabis. They are also specifically for face moisturizers. Any blush, eye shadow, contour, or foundation are not readily available, affordably, with cannabis. Or hemp for that matter. There aren’t any hemp seed oil based make-up and self-care products on the market right now. But the USDA is looking to change that.

Partnership

By partnering with MBC, the USDA is showing that it continues to support and encourage growers, producers, and manufacturing companies to work with hemp. Because hemp is not just for CBD and Delta 8, like many people think. Hemp has been used for thousands of years as rope, canvas, paper, and more industrial uses. But people forget. So by partnering with MBC, the USDA is reminding people just how versatile hemp really is.

“Collaborating with industry partners like MBC, which has expertise in enzymology and the infrastructure for scale-up, is critical to exploring expanded uses for our original technology,” David Compton of USDA wrote in a press release. The hemp industry is ever changing, and the USDA is going to keep up with the times, if not move it forward themselves.

Future

The USDA isn’t only looking into make-up and self-care products for hemp oil seed use. They are also looking into finding better ways of processing hemp into fuels, lubricants, adhesives, food ingredients, and fiber products. Hemp’s versatility seems endless, and the USDA wants to keep motivating others to keep moving forward. They are currently working with thousands of hemp farmers to create a viable database for best growth options and locations to produce more hemp than ever before.
