Canada Looks to Hemp Based Plastics for Standard Use

In 2019, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he was going to ban single use plastics by the end of 2021. Single use plastics are straws, coffee stirrers, rings around cans or bottles of 6-pack of drinks, plastic silverware, take-out food containers, and plastic shopping bags. This is in an effort to reduce environment changes around the globe. Canada may be moving to hemp based plastics in the near future.

It seems that entrepreneurs and hemp industry leaders are on board with this change. Many countries have followed suit after National Geographic released a plastics study. It showed plastic use and creation is a major source of carbon emissions, especially since they are rarely recyclable and contain harmful chemicals. These have major impacts on human and environmental health.

Canada now turns to the hemp industry to remove all plastic waste by the end of 2030. Hemp is a natural substance that breakes down into many different products. Hemp based plastics find themselves gaining popularity in recent years. These plastics break down easily and are rebuilt into new products over and over again. Because of this, hemp based plastics seem to have an infinite amount of rebuilds into various products. It’s way more times than standard oil based plastics and paper products.

Many more countries, including those within the Paris Agreement are turning toward plastic alternatives, hemp being a viable alternative. In the next few years, it will likely be a much more approachable topic. But for now, Canada is seeking alternatives and reaching out to the hemp industry. This offers many positive outcomes to the hemp debate, concern, and industry.
